Children's Song Fail

I don't know a lot of kids songs.  This means that most of the songs I sing to Sam are made up of whatever silly things I see in the room at the time.  But there is a song I remembered hearing at some point in the past and I wanted to learn it.  It took me a while, but I happily found it!

So I'm reading the lyrics aloud and kinda half singing it to my husband to see if he remember the song "Tie Me Kangaroo Down".  The song goes through a list of Australian animals, each one getting it's own verse.  Then I came across this verse:

Let me abos go loose, Lew
Let me abos go loose
They're of no further use, Lew
So let me abos go loose
Altogether now!

Abos.  I've never heard of an abos.  What's an abos?  Was it a kind of bird or lizard?  Hubby didn't know either.  To the internet we went!

n. pl. Ab·os or ab·os Offensive Slang. Used as a disparaging term for an Australian Aborigine.

Oh.  Oh no.  No, no, no.  I gasped.  Morgan laughed, "I guess you can leave that verse out!"  Yeah, we don't need to be teaching that to our offspring.  But I still love the song and will be bouncing Sam on my knee to it.  Besides, I'm pretty sure most people leave out that verse as well.
